A genre is a specific category used to classify forms of creative work, entertainment, and communication (such as books, movies, music, or articles) based on shared conventions, stylistic criteria, and subject matter. It sets clear expectations for the audience and helps consumers find exactly what they are looking for.
While genres dictate the overall framework and tone of a story, a topic (or subject) simply dictates what the story is about. For example, in a Science Fiction book, the genre involves futuristic technology and space, but the topic might be artificial intelligence, political rebellion, or first contact with aliens. The most common genres across major mediums include:
Literature: Fiction (Fantasy, Mystery, Romance, Thriller), Non-fiction (Biographies, Self-help, History), Poetry, and Drama.
Film & Television: Action, Horror, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Documentary, and Western.
Music: Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Rock, Country, Jazz, Classical, and Electronic Dance Music (EDM).
Understanding both the genre and the topic of a creative work is highly useful, whether you are trying to analyze a piece of writing, search for a new movie to watch, or organize a library.
